On July 14, 2014, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service was notified that suspected GE wheat had been discovered growing at the Montana State University’s Southern Agricultural Research Center where Monsanto and researchers grew GE wheat as part of field trials between 2000 and 2003. These field tests were conducted under APHIS’ regulatory approval. Here’s Bernadette Juarez, Director, Investigative and Enforcement Services Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. “With respect to Montana, we initiated this investigation around July 14 when we learned of a suspected detection of GE wheat at the Montana State University’s Southern Agricultural Research Center in Huntley, Montana. This was a research station that had previously conducted authorized field trials in 2000 and 2003. Looking at a regulatory compliance situation where field trials were previously authorized involving this particular type of GE wheat in 2000 and 2003. So we are trying to figure out in this instance why this week was found growing at the research facility’s field location after the conclusion of the trials. Just like we did in the Oregon case we collected samples of the plant tissue and we are conducting genetic analysis and what we have found so far is that the wheat from Montana and the wheat from Oregon are very different. They have very different genetic characteristics and we can determine taste on the composition of the genetic characteristics that the wheat from Montana is not what caused the detection in Oregon which we think is important.” It is amazing how much suspicion is aroused when it comes to GMO crops.
