Owyhee Canyonlands Not Made Designated as National Monument

In the Southwest corner of Oregon, in Malheur County residents are giving a deep sigh of relief. The national monument designation of 2.5 million acres of the Owyhee Canyonlands did not occur. The Owyhee Basin Stewardship Coalition treasure and a Jordan Valley Rancher Elias Eiguren shares
Eiguren: “So the fact that we have had the transition into a Trump Presidency. Past President Obama did not designate a national monument in the Owyhee Canyonlands is just outstanding. We’ve been running really a marathon at a sprinter’s pace for the past year and we are really excited to have made it through without a monument designation.”
When Malheur County residents heard that there was a movement to lock up the 2.5 million acres, they got together and formed the Coalition. He continues with what the organization has achieved in the last year.
Eiguren: “We came together first of all, all the folks in Malheur County — not just sects of people — coming together to actually to advocate for the public lands and natural resources broadly in our county. Which has never happened before. Coming together in an organized manner, we received over $475,000 in contributions in the past year to launch the OurVoiceOurLand Campaign to oppose an Owyhee Canyonlands monument in this area. In doing so, over 11,000 advocates’ signatures via our website and over 15,000 messages to elected officials stating this was not the way we wanted land to be managed here in southern Malheur County.”
