I’m Greg Martin with the Open Range AgriBeef Minute. Artificial insemination or AI is a good way to improve performance and efficiency. Cory Crouthamel - Division Beef Area Sales Manager with ABS Global.
CROUTHAMEL: The bottom line is it allows these cows two chance to become pregnant in the first 21 days of the breeding season where normally they’ve got one. When you run the course of that and the economics your calf crop can often times be 30 to 60 days older which makes them 30 to 60 pounds heavier at weaning and more pounds to sell at the end of the production cycle.
It also allows producers to access superior genetics.
CROUTHAMEL: So like in AgriBeef’s terms or feedlot situation we’re able to use genetics that we can maximize performance as well as carcass quality, efficiency, feed conversion and things like that.
ABS Global does consulting work with producers to help them get the most from their beef.
CROUTHAMEL: I often challenge producers to at least be progressive enough to look at how far we’ve come with these programs. Quite honestly if a person is retaining heifers it’s a good place to start to at least get those heifers AI’d, get them calved the first time, get them into those cow herds but it really behooves a producer in today’s times to pencil these programs and see how it might be able to work for them.
