Open Range Wrap Up

Hey it’s Friday, time for a look back at the week on Open Range Wrap Up. I’m Susan Allen, back after the break. The Ag Industry knows the cattle business is back, but it is sure nice to see main stream media does as well. An article in last weeks Wall Street Journal titled “A Guilt Free Hamburger” touted the benefits of including a juicy steak in your diet,  thanks to new study from the Harvard School of Public Heath that found red meat in the form of non-processed cuts, (the hamburgers steaks and ribs we all love) shouldn’t be blamed for heart risk. In a nut shell it’s about the salt,  not the saturated fat. Processed meat like bacon and sausage can have up to four times the amount of salt as a juicy burger and that’s is what can lead  to heart problems. A second article, same day same paper, reiterated what I have espoused for years, country life is good for kids! Titled Can Dirt Do a Little Good,  doctors from Tufts Medical Center shared new research that kids exposed to dirt, livestock and pets have better immune systems then children in sterile environments. In fact, kids who grow up on farms have lower rates of allergies and asthma while upscale urban infants have not only higher rates but more autoimmune diseases like Type 1 diabetes, MS and inflammatory bowel diseases. Clinical trials are going on right now using a type of worm found in pigs to treat peanut allergies that have tripled between 1997 and 2008 and will soon be tested for asthma. Bottom line, according to the good docs, is that it’s not hard to raise healthy kids; toss the hand sanitizers, let the cat and dog in the house and kick junior outside to play, Ah... preferably in the dirt. I’m susan Allen
