If  there were “do overs” in parenting I’d be the first in line,  but paton the back is that we taught our boys to be at home in the wilderness, in fact as this airs they’re out chasing bear somewhere in the Wallowas. I’m Susan Allen your host of Open Range and  I’ll be back to tell you about a new DVD that could help you or your loved ones survive our  Western Wilderness. Over the years I’ve  heard about countless hunting and outdoor accidents where someone was either unprepared for the elements or overwhelmed by them, thus I always felt it  was critical to raise boys who were confident in  rough country. So in attempts to positively channel their inner Steve Irwin my boys had many entertaining outdoor adventures some scripted by me, others I’d rather not know about. One family favorite was the race to base camp. The boys would be dropped off at different points with a few provisions and a compass and compete to see who made it back to base camp first. Today understanding survival techniques is a mere  DVD  away. Famed Survivorman Les Stroud features a new collection titled  “Alone in the American Wilderness” that aired on  Science Channel. Acting as his own camera man Stroud  films three adventures set in the West.  One segment takes him deep into the Rockies with two horses to reenact the reality of early cowboy life .Another serves as a reminder  in the Sierra Nevada’s you can still become lost as Stroud  reaches  the end of his physical and mental resources . For raw adventure, spectacular Western  scenery and survival tips check out  alone in the American Wilderness, at amazon .com
