Last week while rodeo enthusiasts were glued to the NFR Finals, trust me youngsters throughout the US were roping the family dog and falling to sleep riding a make believe bull. What do you do if your kid wants to rodeo? Well if you’re like me you support them, and chew a few fingernails in the process.  After years searching under beds for baseball cleats, and cleaning grass stains from uniforms,  youth sports was still a  piece of cake compared to being a rodeo mom. While there are no oranges to slice, or Gatorade to remember… there are tons lots details to worry about…  Clothing, gear, and animals need to be in top condition, as each event requires techniques and equipment that could save your kid’s life. A good rodeo school is a critical investment and just because someone was a top contestant doesn’t mean they’re a good teacher so research clinics, schools and instructors reputations, and then show up prepared. Schools for barrel racing, team and tie-down roping usually require that you bring a seasoned horse, whereas steer wrestling clinics provide beginners one.  Rough stock schools typically have equipment; so kids can see whether they like the event before buying all the gear. If your kid wants to rodeo get ready for a great ride, from youth to college level, rodeo teaches responsibility, dedication and toughness and if your son rides broncs like mine did...discipline in prayer.  I’m Susan Allen
