And they’re off... but not Lukas. Racing wasn’t his thing, and after constantly finishing back of the pack he followed the fate of most thoroughbreds and became a racetrack reject. Karen Murdock discovered Lukas through CANTER an adoption agency of sorts for ex-race horses and soon discovered he was difficult, edgy even dangerous to train. She switched gears, To reach Lukas she began to teach him tricks like nodding “Yes”, catching and fetching, bowing and counting and discovered the big horse had not only an amazing capacity to learn but her philosophy of incorporating mutual enjoyment and respect resonated with the former race horse. He became happy. All of his tricks even pushing a barrel, distinguishing colors and identifying shapes are preformed at liberty and Karen says Lukas initiates play just to hear her laugh. His tricks made You Tube...then big time TV, now there is a www.playingwithlucas website and the beautiful red thoroughbred has become an ambassador for adopting ex racehorses . It is easy to profile horses by breed we all do it..., Quarter horses are calm... Thoroughbreds flighty and hot. Lukas proves horses should be viewed individually and we should think creatively to tap their potential .
