11/30/05 Mixed reviews on Bush immigration plan

Idaho Senator Larry Craig says he can support a new comprehensive immigration plan outlined this week by President Bush. It combines a guest working program with increased border security enforcement. While he is praised for wanting to tighten the border he's being criticized even within the Republican Party for his temporary worker program. Canyon County commissioner and Republican congressional candidate Robert Vasquez is one of his strongest Idaho critics. VASQUEZ "Rank and file are sending a clear, clear message to the Republican leadership that there will be no support for a guest worker amnesty program." Senator Craig's AgJobs bill and similar legislation has been stalled in Congress over the status of an estimated eleven million illegal aliens already in this country. While the President wants a new tamper proof identification card he also wants to let workers stay in places like Canyon County for up to six years before they have to return to their home country. VASQUEZ "Any immigration reform that contains a proposal for guest workers is a code word for 'let's give them amnesty.'" Voice of Idaho Agriculture Bill Scott
