Harvest

Around this time of the year, it’s a great opportunity to see farmers in the Treasure Valley in harvest. In South Ada County at the Big D ranch, Neil Durant is picking cranberry beans. “Right now we are harvesting cranberry beans. It’s a thing we started growing a couple of years ago because we had some local demand for it. We are expecting about 25 sacks here which, for the market that they are appealing to, should bring in a very decent return.” Durant not only grows the beans, he mills and sells them as well. “We clean and package them ourselves so we will clean a package of them into our own bags. We have a lot of local markets that we do a lot of work with and they actually buy these beans.” Durrant is happy with the progress of all of his different crops harvests. “The crops are coming along good, we’ve had some weather that has put us back a little bit but overall it’s not too bad, we are about halfway through. Finishing up the fourth cutting of hay, right in the middle of bean harvest, they are chopping silage corn, I have beets coming up in two weeks.” And just as a safety reminder to you drivers out there, always keep a lookout for big, slow moving farm equipment if you venture out into farm country.
