Be Respectful

Lemhi County ranchers are having problems with elk herds taking up residence on their own land. They are invading corrals and hay stacks and causing financial losses. In an effort to deal with the problem game managers are allowing more hunting opportunities but that too has its negatives and it is having very little impact. Rancher Steve Bachman: "Everybody drives around and they see all these elk in our fields. Everybody wants to come in there to shoot a bull. We quit hazing during the bull season because that's the only way that we can keep from having ourselves in a shooting range." Hunter behavior has many ranchers on edge. Rancher Dave Phelps wants hunters to come but, just be what locals call, a good hunter. "A good hunter is one that is respectful, uses a lot of common sense. If you ask him to shoot in it proper direction he will do that. Sometimes you get people out there just shooting 20 rounds here and there without even thinking. Down here in the Valley we have a lot of houses. Be aware of that. Just be respectful, that's the main thing."
