How does all the wheat that we sold to Taiwan make the journey from Idaho to Taiwan? I asked the Idaho wheat commission’s Teresa Waterman. “The wheat shipped to Taiwan, we utilize the river system, so it goes down the Columbia and ends up in Portland. It is offloaded in Portland onto a grain vessel headed to Taiwan. The wheat that is grown in this area is trucked to Boardman, Oregon where it is offloaded onto a green barge and then barged down the river to Portland.” Who processes the wheat? “They buy the commodity wheat from Idaho and they mill it. We hosted the flower millers. They purchase our wheat and mill it for flour and their use for their end products go into their Taiwanese style noodles, it goes into their confectionery’s. They have their breads and sweetbreads, sponge cakes, that’s what the soft white goes into.” The sale directly affects 200 Idaho families.
