With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Since we just passed the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, it seems only appropriate that Moon Cherry season should arrive.

To be more precise, they’re actually Stemilt’s “Half Mile Closer to the Moon” cherries …

SHALES … “Half-mile Closer to the Moon Cherries are actually grown 2,640 feet, or a half-mile above sea level, so a half-mile closer to the moon.”

Stemilts Brianna Shales says those sky-high cherries come from fourth-generation grower Kyle Mathison …

SHALES … “The idea behind the brand is really inspired by Kyle because not only is he growing orchards at high altitudes, but he’s also doing it with kind of the lunar cycles in mind. So, he will tell people, and it’s absolutely true, that he likes to harvest cherries within just a couple days before a full-moon because the gravitational pull that the moon provides the earth will actually pull more nutrients into his fruit.”

And, Shales says the out of this world campaign is appropriate for these great tasting cherries …

SHALES … “So, we built this brand of Moon Cherries around Kyle and this idea of the lunar cycle and also the fact that they’re grown at high elevations which is a really unique thing in the cherry world. It allows us to extend our season and do so with really premium, high quality varieties.”

Listen tomorrow for more on Stemilt’s Half-Mile Closer to the Moon cherries and the special day that’s coming up intended to celebrate them.
