With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. We told you yesterday how awareness of wine research in our state is growing, but an opportunity to take advantage of that work is coming up.

The Washington Wine Commission’s Melissa Hansen says WAVE-X is the lighter version of the longer Washington Advancement in Viticulture and Enology, or WAVE seminars …

HANSEN … “We have one that will be coming up on July 11th in Woodinville for the west side wine makers because it’s tough for them to always get over to Prosser and into the Yakima Valley. And, the theme is improving wine quality through research and chemistry.”

And, Hansen says the experts will be on hand …

HANSEN … “We have three researchers, Dr. Jim Harbertson, Dr. Tom Collins, Thomas Henick-Kling. And, they will be talking about how to avoid and prevent faults in your wine, winery sanitation, knowing what microbes are in your wine, how to use sulfur dioxide effectively and appropriately. It will be sort of a broad topic, but three hours of really focused information.”

Hansen says if you’d like to attend …

HANSEN … “If they’re interested in registering, if they go to the Wine Commission website, which is just washingtonwine.org, and there’s a research page with four categories at the top of the website, and there is a WAVE button. And, if they click on the WAVE button they’ll see the July 11th information.”

She says the purpose of WAVE-X is to raise awareness about the value of research funded by the wine industry through the grape and wine assessments paid to the Wine Commission.
