Apple Drawing Part 2

Apple Drawing Part 2

Apple Drawing. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

It will be some time before consumers see the new WA-38 or Cosmic Crisp apple in the stores. The first commercial trees have not been planted yet but we know who will be growing them now according to Jim Moyer with WSU's Agricultural Research Center.

MOYER: This first batch of trees will be available in 2017 We had the drawing now so that the growers and the nurserymen could get together and they could choose an appropriate rootstock and do all the things they like to do so that it has an optimal chance of survival.

Twenty-four Washington State growers were chosen in a random drawing for the opportunity to grow the new apple. Again, it will take some time to see apples in the stores.

MOYER: After that first batch of trees is planted it takes about four years for the apple to find its way into the marketplace after the trees are planted for them to bear fruit. And then they hit full production in about five or six years.

Even things like the marketing materials are still two or three years off but the Cosmic Crisp has generated a lot of excitement and attention even though few people have had the opportunity to taste it, even Moyer.

MOYER: It's gotten pretty good reception. It's in such limited quantities that I was working on it for several months before I got to sample it and finally I made a comment that for anything I had to work so hard on, I ought to at least get to taste it.

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
