Pregnant Worker Seminar

Pregnant Worker Seminar

Pregnant Worker Seminar. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

When it comes to your tree fruit operation you normally wouldn't consider pregnancy as a disability. The Washington Farm Labor Association is holding a seminar aimed at this topic. WAFLA's Dan Fazio explains.

FAZIO: That's created a really interesting debate for us here in the HR community. The EEOC has weighed in on this effort. We've been working with various state and federal agencies and the one that has taken the lead on this is the EEOC or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. So they're really wanting to establish guidelines. For us here in the agriculture industry it's a very, very common question, especially during the fruit harvest season.

Orchardists want to know what their options are when a worker shows us 6, 7, 8 months pregnant and wants to pick apples or cherries.

FAZIO: And that's really what we've asked the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to outline for us. On Monday, the 14th of July the EEOC delivered some controversial guidelines for handling pregnant workers and out luck that we'd already scheduled them to come brief us as part of our July Hot Topics webinar series and then the week after that we are going to talk about how you handle these verification of employment requests from agencies, from individuals, etc.

When you register now you'll receive a recording the webinar. You can register online at http://wafla.org
