01/30/06 UI Lochsa hard white spring wheat

Farm and Ranch January 30, 2006 The Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station is releasing a new hard white spring wheat next month. It's named UI Lochsa and was developed by University of Idaho wheat breeder Ed Souza. Souza: "Lochsa over the past four years has averaged about 111 bushels compared to Westbred 936 which is our standard irrigated hard wheat, it's a hard red. It had 105 bushels. So you know it is a very significant yield increase over Westbred 936 at very comparable protein concentrations. 936 typically runs about 13.5 protein in our trials and Lochsa has been running 14% in the same trials." Souza says people who have grown Lolo or 377s under irrigation will be pleased with UI Loshsa's straw strength. It has also demonstrated moderate stripe rust resistance. Souza doesn't recommend UI Lochsa for northern Idaho fields, where he says its yield benefits won't be obvious, but he calls it a nice wheat to grow in southern Idaho. Producers who would like to place orders for seed should contact Kathy Stewart-Williams, coordinator of the Idaho Foundation Seed Program now or in early February by calling 208-423-6655 in Kimberly or e-mail Williams@kimberly.uidaho.edu Souza advises that if you're going to grow hard white wheat for the first time, investigate where you are going to market it before you plant it.
