Fake Meat Win for Ranchers

With the farm and ranch report I'm Rick Worthington. There's been some very big news for ranchers coming out of Washington D.C. In recent weeks. Colin Woodall is with the NCAA and says they're celebrating a big win.

"The decision from USDA and FDA on how they're going to move forward with the regulation of fake meat. This is a big win for in CBA and one that we've been working on for well over a year now. What it does is it will gives the jurisdiction to FDA to look at the overall safety and development of the fake meat product. And if FDA determines it's safe to come forward and go into the retail chain then USDA will step forward and we'll do the daily inspection of the product. But more importantly USDA will have the ability to approve what label goes on that product and what it's called and that's what we're going to spend probably most of 2019 working on is trying to determine exactly what that product is going to be called."

Labeling issues have also been a problem for dairy producers.

Anyone following the fake meat saga can recognize the parallel trends here with the FDA now doing more to force non dairy products to stop calling themselves milk or cheese. Following the introduction of the dairy pride act as well the USDA and the FDA will now also be involved in regulatory oversight of cell culture food originating from livestock and poultry. Known as fake meat.
