Weekly Hay Report

Here is USDA Grain and Livestock Reporter Greg Sanders with the Columbia Basin Hay report from last week.
Sanders: “We had 5,400 tons of hay last week. Trade was slow to moderate with light to moderate demand. Very good demand was noted for Timothy. On the higher quality export alfalfa sellers were required to pay to tarp it. Alfalfa small squares premium bales sold for $150 for the export market and Timothy grass small bales for the retail/stable market good to premium quality sold for $200 per ton.
In Idaho compared to the previous week feeder alfalfa was firm and trade remains slow with light to moderate demand. Mid squares of alfalfa rated fair to good tarped sold between $70 and $85 per ton and mid-squares of alfalfa rated utility to fair bottom bales sold for $80 per ton. Mid-Squares of mixed grass rated fair to good sold for $75 per ton.
In Oregon prices trended generally steady in a limited test compared to the previous week’s prices. Most demand is with the retail/stable hay. The recent snows slowed movement as trucks can’t get to the farms to get loaded. In Central Oregon small squares of premium meadow grass for $210 per ton for the retail/stable market. In Lake County large squares of premium alfalfa for export sold between $160 to $170 per ton. In Eastern Oregon large squares of alfalfa rated fair sold for $105 per ton. In Klamath Basin large squares of premium organic alfalfa sold for $285 per ton. Harney County had no new sales confirmed.
