07/05/05 New Eltan hard wheats

Eltan hard white and hard red wheats get names. This is the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report. I'm Bob Hoff. Today's report next. Farm and Ranch June July 5, 2005 The hard white winter and hard red winter wheats Washington State University wheat breeder Steve Jones developed from the soft white variety Eltan were approved for full release this spring. Jones says those new varieties were also recently named. The hard white was previously known as Washington 7936. Jones: "It's now called MDM and that is in honor of Michael Moore who past away a few years ago and was the son of Jim and Anne Moore in Kahlotus." The hard red winter Eltan type which was known as Washington 7939 is now officially Bauermeister. Jones: "The Bauermeisters, we named it after Dale and Dan. Dale is the father, Dan is the son. They farm in the Connell area. We have been working with them about 30 years. They have been helping us develop wheat varieties. So that's MDM and Bauermeister, two new varieties." Jones says MDM was the highest yielding hard white winter wheat in Washington trials the past two years. USDA-ARS Western Wheat Quality lab analysis shows MDM has good bread and noodle quality. Evaluation by the Pacific Northwest Quality Council found the variety has acceptable quality for domestic hard white winter wheat uses. Bauermeister, the hard red winter wheat, was also found by the Council to have acceptable quality for domestic hard red winter wheat uses. Foundation seed of both varieties will be available this fall. Tomorrow, what Montana's interest in these wheats may mean. I'm Bob Hoff and that's the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
