Ag Big Data Why Should You Care?

Last week, we heard from Enterprise Group Limited President Doug Hackney about how Ag Big Data will shape agriculture in the future. That future isn’t as far away as you may think. Hackney suggests that if you are soon to be retired than you can ignore it and you’ll probably be okay … but if you have a son or a daughter on your operation about to take over your farm or ranch — they need to pay attention to ag big data and how it may affect their future and the future of the operation.
He lists both as two trends that will increase future consolidation of the industry even quicker. He says that if young producers want to compete to farm more ground in the future — Ag Big Data needs to be an important factor.
Hackney: “So you have a double whammy on consolidation — so now you have fewer people operating over much larger ground — controlling much larger pieces of ground. So those people when they are enabled and empowered with data and analytics. Think about competing for 2,000 choice acres — you walk in the room and you’ve got nothing but your spiral notebook in your pocket and the person you are competing with walks in with a notebook or a tablet with all kinds of data and analytics and they knew exactly what they’ve done and how they did it …. who is going to win?”
