Consumers haven't always had questions about their food and where it comes from. But the world is changing and perhaps more than ever families are scrutinizing every part of the food supply chain.

Charlie Arnot is the CEO of the Center for Food Integrity. His organization exists because of our healthy skepticism.

"Over the past 50 years there've been enough violations of public trust by all kinds of institutions, be they government, religious institutions, educational institutions dating all the way back to 1968. As a society we've been conditioned to be skeptical about whether or not institutions are worthy of public trust. Over that same period of time we've seen phenomenal consolidation, integration and the application of technology in agriculture which results in food being safer, more available and more affordable than it's ever been before. It really is a marvel. But it now causes people to think of the of the food system as an institution and therefore question whether we're still worthy of trust."

Arnot says there is an assumption among the public that large food companies put profit ahead of consumer interests and safety. He says the large scale food producers must find ways to address consumer concerns without becoming defensive. He says the scale has changed but the commitment to do what's right is still strong

The Center for Food Integrity is a national non-profit organization dedicated to building consumer trust and confidence in today's food system. Members include representatives from Costco, Monsanto, Sysco, The World Wildlife Foundation and state farm bureaus
