Colorado's millet producers should check to see if their ballots for the millet check-off vote is in their mailboxes. Ballots were mailed August 9 and voting is open until August 31.

Glenda Mostek at the Colorado Department of Agriculture explains how the check off program would work if passed by voting producers.

"When growers would sell their millet , the elevator would be keep a penny a bushel, two pennies a bushel, five pennies a bushel whatever they vote on to fund educational, promotional and research for millet in Colorado."

In this case, the proposed assessment (check-off) is five cents per hundredweight, which will be collected by first-handlers. The assessment would be fully refundable to producers who submit an application to the board of control within 30 days of sale to a handler.

Mostek says a check off program would not replace the Millet Association.

Producers not receiving a ballot by August 16 should contact Glenda Mostek at the Colorado Department of Agriculture and a ballot will be sent via first-class mail.

Ballots must be postmarked on or before August 31 to be counted.
