Christmas Trees Pt 1

I'm Bob Larson. It's been reported that Christmas trees are in short supply this year, but it shouldn't be enough to dampen your holiday spirit.

Bryan Ostlund, Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Association, says it's the result of a long-coming market adjustment ...

BRYAN OSTLUND ... "So we had about 10 years of oversupply, which tend to push which tends to push prices down. We started to really see that turn last year and then this year in a big way. So our total numbers of trees that we will harvest this year are certainly down a bit. It generally impacts us more on markets outside this area though so local consumers, you generally don't see a huge change, it's very consistent. So I don't want to scare anybody, we're seriously short on Christmas trees, as some of the wholesale buyers are experiencing this, but as a consumer here in the Northwest, we're good!"

The reason, Ostlund says is because the Pacific Northwest is Christmas Tree country...

BRYAN OSTLUND ... "As a region, we are the number one producing region in the country and the largest in the world. Oregon, as a state, has the largest production. If you break out states individually, Washington would be about number four now on the list. North Carolina being number two, Michigan being number three, and then Washington in the number four spot."

Ostlund says if you live in the Northwest and want a Christmas Tree, you should have no trouble finding one.

I'll have more on this year's Christmas Tree crop tomorrow.
