The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has rolled out an ad campaign aimed at tax reform. The Association has a new website: www.Cattlemenfortax.reform.com which says America’s unfair tax code is jeopardizing the long-term viability of family ranching operations. The campaign specifically targets the estate tax - better known as the death tax.

Jay Wolf a 3rd generation Nebraska rancher is featured in one of the ads airing this month.

“The value of the land has changed dramatically especially over the last few years. Our income hasn’t changed but land values have and it becomes difficult to face a tax on something like that. It’s not a cash asset but if you have a big estate tax on it it’s out of proportion to its earning ability. It can be just devastating.”

The Federal Estate tax is levied on what a person passes on after death. These items can include cash, retirement accounts and property. Investopedia says estates worth more than $5.45 million for 2016 were subject to the tax.

NCBA President Craig Uden says they want a permanent repeal of “the onerous death tax, which charges farmers on the often-inflated appraised value of their property and equipment.”
