Tire Tips For Spring Planting Season

As farmers are beginning spring planting - it’s important to check your tires before you head to the field - according to James Crouch - farm segment marketing manager for Michelin agricultural tires.

Crouch: “Having the right tire pressure is probably the most important consideration. Over inflated tires can cause excessive soil compaction which can interfere with healthy root development. It can also increase the amount of slip causing excess fuel consumption and excessive wear on your tires as well as your machine. And it can result in a less comfortable ride due to the bouncing and vibrations due to the overinflated tires.”

Crouch notes that under-inflated tires can also lead to problems.

Crouch: “You can do irreversible damage to the tire casing and a high risk of tire failure. You can also see excessive wear while rolling due to too much rolling resistance. And much more difficult to maneuver at field speeds.”

Proper tire pressure is the easiest way to improve fuel efficiency and it’s the most often ignored. He also reminds farmers to check the general condition of their tires’ tread.

Crouch: “Make sure that your tread makes the whole season. You don’t want to be caught in a spot where you need tires and you can’t get them. And operating on worn tread can also cause a lack of traction which can cause reduce fuel efficiency and slippage in the field.”

Crouch says proper tire performance can provide season long benefits - including longer tire life, cost savings and higher yield potential.
