NASS Cattle Survey

NASS Cattle Survey

In January, USDA’s National Ag Statistic Service will be surveying more than 40,000 cattle operations nationwide to provide an up-to-date measure of the U.S. cattle inventories. NASS Mountain Regional Director Bill Meyer urges those involved in Colorado beef industry to fill out the survey if they receive one.
Meyer: “For many years the cattle numbers have been declining, starting last year the herd is rebuilding. In recent months, we’ve seen prices go down quite a bit. Now people really want to know how much the herd is being rebuilt. How many beef cows are being put back out on the farms and ranches. To me, it is very important for the industry so they have a good feel of many are out there to make the marketing decisions that will be need next year.”
Approximately 2,000 beef industry participants will be receive the survey in Colorado, Meyer continues with the options for filling out the survey.
Meyer: “We will be mailing it out the end of this month. That is the easiest way to do it. You can just fill it out and send it back in. It will also be available online. Everyone in the sample will be getting a pre-survey letter with a secure code to a secure website to fill it out. For those that prefer not to mail it back in, we will be calling the first two weeks of January.”
Meyer reminds all participants that all individual information is strictly protected and all information remains anonymous. He adds that the row crop survey is currently being done right now, so if you have received a survey, please respond.
