Ag Education

Ag Education. I'm Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

You've all heard stories about school age kinds thinking that milk came from a machine in the back of the store and not from a cow. Bette Blinde, Executive Director for the Colorado Foundation for Agriculture says their aim is to teach kids about their food and agriculture.

BLINDE: The foundation is a 501c3 not-for-profit education corporation that actively promotes an understanding of Colorado agriculture. And basically what we do is we work to provide resource materials and encourage educators to use agriculture as a theme to teach other academic subjects in their classroom. So at the same time they're teaching math skills and reading skills those students are also learning about Colorado agriculture.

She says that the Foundation provides materials for students aimed at ag.

BLINDE: We provide to the teacher, the Colorado Reader Series which is a student newspaper on Colorado agriculture and natural resource topics. We provide those readers free of charge to any educator that wants to use them. Consequently we have about 1800 classrooms across the State of Colorado subscribing to receive the Colorado Reader Series.

The teachers also have the opportunity to get out of the classroom.

BLINDE: Another project that we do is out food, fiber and more summer ag institute for teachers. IT's a five day course and we take teachers that have little or no agriculture background and we immerse them in things agricultural. They get a whole new perspective of agriculture working that day on the farm or ranch with that farmer.

And that's Colorado Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
