Ag Weather Impacts

It looks like the ridge of high pressure that has dominated our weather pattern for the past several days will persist this weekend and into early next week. So really not much change from what we've seen so far this week. Look for temperatures to average slightly above normal with mostly clear skies and light winds. These light winds combined with temperature inversions are preventing much mixing in the atmosphere and that's why we're seeing hazy conditions. Any field burning will have poor smoke dispersion for the next several days. Medium and longer range weather models are still pointing to a change in the pattern for the mid to latter part of next week with an increased chance for light rain starting late Wednesday and Thursday. Although brief drying is possible next Friday and Saturday, this does appear to be the beginning where we're seeing a more active weather pattern and with cooler air for the end of October into early November. In the mean time, soil temperatures have risen into the lower and mid 50s and will likely warm another 2-4 degrees into the middle of next week. So good conditions for germination and early growth of winter wheat. NOAA's climate prediction center is expecting a weak El Nino which means slightly warmer than normal sea surface temperatures in the equatorial pacific ocean. El Ninos typically mean fewer storms for the inland northwest resulting in less mountain snowpack for next spring.
